Supporting veterinary care and education in communities of the Colombian Amazon.
Where it started
How Operation Amazonas started
Operation Amazonas really began in 2025, when Gray Muzzle Society co-founders Molly and Kayson visited the Colombian Amazon. While staying at Chunaki Ecolodge outside Puerto Nariño, we learned more about the challenges local communities face in accessing veterinary care.
We came home wanting to find a way to help.
Our first outreach trip
Operation Amazonas 2026
In February 2026, we returned for our first Operation Amazonas outreach trip. We brought veterinary supplies and provided basic care, including parasite treatment and wound care, while talking with community members about animal health and the veterinary needs in the area.
It was a successful outreach trip and helped us build relationships for what comes next. It also showed us some of the challenges of bringing an international veterinary team into the Colombian Amazon. Regulations, permits, transportation, refrigeration, and other logistics can make even basic veterinary services complicated.
Operation Amazonas 2027
Progress continues
After the 2026 trip, we wanted to keep building Operation Amazonas while keeping Gray Muzzle Society focused on animal welfare.
Kayson created Threaded Expeditions to handle the travel side separately. Gray Muzzle Society can now focus on fundraising, supplies, and veterinary support.
The 2027 trip will donate $500 from each full-paying traveler to Operation Amazonas.
Local partnership
Working with Amazon Paws
The 2026 trip also showed us that working with a local veterinary partner made more sense than bringing in an outside veterinary team. For 2027, we're partnering with Amazon Paws, a veterinary clinic based in Leticia.
Amazon Paws can provide local, on-the-ground veterinary care, while Gray Muzzle Society focuses on raising funds, purchasing supplies, and supporting the program. For 2027, we're starting with two things: vaccines and education.
We'll also continue working with Chunaki Ecolodge, whose support and community relationships have been part of Operation Amazonas from the beginning.
